According to a recent survey, the percentage of Americans aged 12 and above using Facebook has fluctuated over the past decade. 

In 2013, 58% of the United States population was Facebook users. This number held steady in 2014, before rising by four percentage points to 62% in 2015. A rise of two percentage points brought the percentage of Americans on Facebook to 64% in 2016.

By 2017, the proportion of US consumers using Facebook reached 67%. In other words, more than two out of every three Americans that year were Facebook users. This was also the year Facebook’s penetration peaked in the US.

The percentage of Americans using Facebook fell consecutively in the two years that followed. In 2018, it dipped by five percentage points, to 62%, before a marginal decrease brought it down to 61% in 2019.

Three years of fluctuation saw the percentage of Americans on Facebook rise to 63% in 2020 and fall to 61% in 2021, before inching back up to 63% in 2022.

This raises the question: What percentage of Americans use Facebook in 2023? The data shows that this number is expected to fall by two percentage points to 61%, which means that this year, just over three in five Americans are active Facebook users.

What percentage of Americans are on Facebook: breakdown by age

Breaking this down further, the data shows that the percentage of Americans on Facebook is the highest among users between the ages of 35 and 54. Close to three-quarters (73%) of the US population in this age range are Facebook users.

This number falls to 56% for those aged 55 and above and 55% for consumers aged 12 to 34.
