Most Popular Messaging Apps in the USA: Top Six
According to the latest data, WhatsApp Messenger is the most popular messaging app downloaded on the Google Play Store in the USA. This is no surprise, considering it’s the most used messaging app globally, with two billion users. In fact, estimates list WhatsApp as the most popular chat app in as many as 109 countries.
After WhatsApp, the second-most used chat app in the USA is Messenger. Incidentally, Facebook Messenger is also the second-most popular chat app globally. Both WhatsApp and Messenger are owned by Meta, formerly known as Facebook.
The number of Facebook Messenger users has been rising consistently over the past few years. In 2021, there are 135.9 million Facebook Messenger users in the USA, up from 133 million in 2020. By 2022, this number is expected to increase to 138.1 million.
Third and fourth on the list of the most popular messaging apps in the USA are Telegram and Discord, respectively. Even though the two apps were founded fairly recently (Telegram in 2013 and Discord in 2013) in comparison with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, they were still able to break into the top four, thanks to their quick sign-up rates.
The fifth-most popular messaging app in the USA is TextNow. Though it’s not as well known as some of its competitors, it works in similar ways in that users can send texts and make calls for free over WiFi. What sets TextNow apart, though, is that users are given a new phone number when they download the app.
After TextNow, sixth on the list of the most popular chat apps in the US is Firefox. As a browser with chat support features, users can send and receive SMS or MMS when using it.
