The most followed person on Twitter is currently US singer Katy Perry with 107.47 million followers. Not only does the “Fireworks” singer hold the title of the most-followed person on Twitter, but she was also the first Twitter user to hit 50 million and 100 million followers in 2013 and 2017, respectively.
Perry maintained her dominance on the social media site despite Twitter wiping millions of fake and locked accounts last year, which shaved off 2.8 million from her follower base.
Second of the list of accounts with the most Twitter followers is that of former US President Barack Obama, who isn’t that far behind Perry. With a follower base of 106.42 million, Obama has less than one percent fewer followers than Perry.
Obama is also no stranger to getting his tweets retweeted. Obama’s tweet on Charlottesville in 2017 was, then, the most retweeted tweet of all time, and remains the seventh-most retweeted tweet today. That was also the second time Obama achieved such an honor, the first of which was in 2012 with his celebratory re-election tweet.
Canadian singer Justin Bieber comes in third on the list of the ten accounts with the most Twitter followers. Since joining the platform just over ten years ago, the 25-year-old has amassed over 105 million followers and is, after Katy Perry, the second person to cross the 100 million Twitter followers mark.
These three most popular Twitter accounts are pretty neck-and-neck, with just 1.77 million followers separating them. They are also quite some distance ahead of fourth-placed Rihanna, who has 91.29 million followers – 15.8 percent fewer than Bieber.
The list of the most popular Twitter accounts is dominated primarily by singers. Of the top 10, more than half are singers. Perry, Bieber, and Rihanna aside, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Justin Timberlake are the three other singers on the list. The remaining four include Portuguese football captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who, with the most-followed Instagram account, is the most popular athlete on social media. Comedian Ellen DeGeneres, and YouTube, the corporate account with the most followers on Twitter, complete the top ten.
